Twenty20 World Cup 2010 1st Semi Final – Sri Lanka v England

twenty20 world cup 2010For the first time after six years England able to get into the semi final of ICC major events and they will not look backward to help themselves to win their first major trophy when they will take on Sri Lanka in the first semi final of ICC world twenty20 2010.

On the other hand Sri Lanka the last world cup runners up will not only eye berth in the Final of ICC world twenty20 but also try to go one step further to clinch the trophy. History suggest that in the last two edition of world twenty20, only Asian teams able to get into the final and one of them able to lift the cup.

In inaugural world twenty20, India, Australia, Pakistan and New Zealand qualified for the last four and eventually India and Pakistan make it to the Final. In 2009 world twenty20, Sri Lanka, West Indies, Pakistan and South Africa make into the semi final but at that time also Sri Lanka and Pakistan played the Final. So this time if everything goes that way we can expect final between two Asian teams again.

Having said that it will be not easy for Sri Lanka to get pass in form England team, they are the inventor of twenty20 and they will not let this golden opportunity to slip from their hands. England have so far played some fearless cricket in this tournament and reached in the semi final after winning all of their super eight games. They have fearless top order batsman along with some classical stroke makers in the middle order. Their bowling units also looked versatile.

R.Sidebotoom, T.Bresnan, S.Broad bowled really well in this tournament which is backed up by some quality spin bowling from G.Swann and M.Yardy.

On the other hand Sri Lanka proved in their last game that they can win even without much contribution from their top orders. They have chased down 164 runs quite easily in the end and that was the really incredible for them. The successful run chase against India has given them lot of boost in their confidence in batting department. Their bowlers also looked solid in the death overs, they have conceded just 37 runs to India in the last five overs.

England is already boosted by the return of their star batsman K.Pietersen who was in London for few days for first berth of his son. He is back and will play a key role in England success against the Sri Lanakans.

On slow and turning ST Lucia wickets, Sri Lanka may give chance to mystery spinner A.Mendis who has not played in the last game against Indians.

Likely Playing XI for both Teams (Match is Schedule to begin at 21:00 PM India Time)

England Squad: Michael Lumb, Craig Kieswetter, K.Pietersen, Paul Collingwood, Eoin Morgan, Luke Wright, Tim Bresnan, Graeme Swann, Michael Yardy, Stuart Broad, Ryan Sidebottom.
