Sehwag and Gambhir brilliance help India to win series against New Zealand

Virendra Sehwag smashed 125 runs of just 74 balls to guide his team to first one day international series win on New Zealand soil. Initially chasing a target of 281 runs (D/L method) in 47 overs, both opener went on to jobs in blistering fashion to put on 201 runs for the first wicket before rain interruption and Indian team declared as winner by the margin of 84 runs by D/L method.

Virendra Sehwag in the process of his 11th ODI century also breaks the record of fastest century by the Indian batsman in ODI. He scored his century by hitting the Daniel Vettori for six to reach his three figure mark in just 60 balls to surpass the previous record held by Md. Azharuddin (100 of 62 balls). Sehwag 100 runs of 60 balls are the seventh fastest century of all time.

It seems that Seddon Park, Hamilton ground has something for the openers, because in the last ODI played at this venue New Zealand openers added 165 runs in 18.1 overs and in todays match first it was Ryder and McCullum who went on to put 102 runs in 19.1 overs then Indian Opener Virendra Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir put on unbeaten 201 runs of 23.3 overs to guide India to comfortable win.

Earlier New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori won the toss and decided to bat on a wicket. However Indian new ball bowler bowled really well to check New Zealand scoring in the initial overs.

B.McCullum top scored for New Zealand with 77 runs of 95 balls and put on 102 runs for the first wicket with J.Ryder (46 runs 57 balls) to give New Zealand a solid foundation for the batsman to follow. However Indian spinner Yuvraj Singh and Yusuf Pathan bowled really well and conceded just 54 runs in 14 overs between them and also shared one wicket each.

But New Zealand middle order didn’t capitalized on the start given by the openers and lost five wickets for just 73 runs.

At one stage New Zealand was tattering at 175/5 in 37 over but thanks to 95 run partnership of just 61 balls for the sixth wicket between P.McGlashan (56 runs of 42 balls) and G.Elliott (35 runs of 27 balls) which helped New Zealand to compile 270/5 in rain reduce 47 over game.

Last game of ODI series will be played at Eden Park, Auckland on 14th of March. Match will start from 06:30 AM India time.

Virendra Sehwag is declared Man of the Match for his inning of 125 runs of 74 balls.
